  • England v New Zealand – the Aftermath

    James
    22 Nov 2009 | 4:03 am
A much improved performance from England at Twickenham still resulted in a comfortable 19-6 win for the opposition, so where do we go from here. For all the talk of performance versus results, we saw a reasonable performance and a defeat. An All Blacks victory was pretty much inevitable, so the spirits were lifted by the passion showed by the men in white, particularly in the first half when they refused to let New Zealand settle into the game. However, the side still looked bereft of ideas, and with more quick ball to enjoy, they rarely did anything with it. One move in the second half that…
  • Andy Robinson delighted as Scotland beat Australia

    James
    22 Nov 2009 | 3:01 am
Scotland beat Australia for the first time in 27 years yesterday, maintaining Andy Robinson’s 100% record as the man in charge. Two penalties from Phil Godman and a dropped goal from Chris Paterson were enough to clinch victory, despite a last-minute try from Ryan Cross – Matt Giteau missed the conversion that would have saved their blushes. The Scottish players fought heroically, and although Giteau missed three penalties, Scotland’s defensive effort meant that the win was nothing less than deserved. Robinson said afterwards, “That was the most courageous performance…

  • England v New Zealand predictions

    James
    20 Nov 2009 | 12:43 am
Normally I get excited on Friday that it’s time to make my SportGuru picks, but the prospect of predicting England to lose heavily is not much fun. I wonder if Johnno is playing SportGuru as well, and picked New Zealand to win by fewer than 10 points. Perhaps he looked at the players he had available and chose the biggest, oldest lumps he could find to ensure that his prediction was as close as possible. Predictions game or not, that’s what he has done – everyone seems to agree that this is a ‘damage limitation’ selection, and not a side that will create space,…
  • Johnson is impersonating Robinson

    Tom
    19 Nov 2009 | 8:27 am
“I’d like to see more enjoyment with ball in hand. We had too many players in the ruck and that produced slow ball.” “We have to look at how we want to play. I thought we lacked a bit of ambition.” If William Hill were taking bets on the man who made these post-match remarks, one name unlikely to feature on many slips is Andy Robinson. Robinson sporting a familiar frown The 45-year-old former flanker is arguably best remembered for his demise as England head coach. I am probably not the only one that still pictures him wearing a familiar frown after yet another uninspiring England…

The maximum sentence for "physical abuse of match officials" is a life ban, and the "low-end entry point" is six months. So why the leniency? That’s probably more of a humping than we expected. Listening to the radio commentary it sounds like the Hugo experiment worked pretty well and Thom Evans didn’t seem to get much ball. How many times have we seen the scrum-half break (usually Mike Blair) with no-one on his shoulder and the move fizzles out? This time when Cus went through the gap, pack-attack-captain Beattie was on his shoulder and lo and behold, try! While on other days a better (Aussie?) defence might have stopped that one, or the pass for Morrison’s try would have been given as forward, Scotland don’t usually get the breaks in International rugby so we’ll take them against a team that…

This is what the veteran Welsh rugby writer had to say: ”Once we get a supposed national characteristic into our heads, a national trait or a so-called national strength, there is no shifting it. It becomes a consuming dogma. “You know the sort of thing: West Indies produce great fast bowlers. The French are rude and shocking drivers. The Scots are tight as ducks’ backsides.

"That's never going over" Many people have “anxiety dreams”; for example that they’re on a bus naked, or sitting an exam with no preparation. This morning, the Wallabies awoke to find that their anxiety dream had come true – they had lost to Scotland. I struggle to think of an occasion when I’ve seen a side with so much possession and so many attacking opportunities, against an opponent with no meaningful attack, lose with a miserly 8 points to show for their effort. This way up I’ve written this post straight after the game while the pain is still raw and untempered, and I’m trying to work out if that’s the worst I’ve seen the Wallabies play. I suspect it is. We’ll post a more balanced review later. That we still had a chance to win with the last kick is perhaps a measure of how “outclassed” these Scots were, completely lacking the ability to break our line with their only territory coming from the plethora of Wallaby mistakes. That’s not to take away from an immense defensive effort from the Scots, they…
