England v Australia predictions
6 Nov 2009 | 4:01 amCan England beat Australia at Twickenham tomorrow? I think they can, and here’s why. A lot has been said about the leadership qualities of Steve Borthwick, but there’s no denying the fact that his team are at the top of the Guinness Premiership, and the England captain has been performing well in club colours. He’s not the fastest lock in the loose, but he’ll do a job in the set-piece, and he could even be the hero if he can challenge the Australian lineout – Jonny kicking for territory and the English second rows demonstrating why they’ve been picked is a… -
Wales v New Zealand predictions
6 Nov 2009 | 1:24 amIt’s been 56 years since Wales last beat New Zealand, and with the All Blacks not quite at their best recently, there is optimism amongst the Welsh that they could cause an upset. However, England aren’t the only ones with injury problems – Wales have suffered too. Prop Adam Jones is a huge loss as he’s been a cornerstone of recent success, whilst full-back Lee Byrne will also be sorely missed. Byrne’s injury does mean that James Hook will start in a side that also features Stephen Jones, so for those that trumpet the ‘get your best 15 players on the… -

Live Updates For each England international, we’ll be bringing you live updates (from Twickenham hopefully), so you can follow the action all… -

Brian Ashton: Weaker Wallabies must rediscover killer instinct
6 Nov 2009 | 4:00 pmIt goes without saying that this afternoon's Twickenham international between England and Australia is an important one for both countries as they seek to build confidence and continuity ahead of the next World Cup, but I have to confess that it's more difficult than usual to take a firm view on how things will turn out. A big part of me struggles to see the Wallabies winning, for reasons I will explain. There again, there is always something perilous about writing off any Australian team ahead of the event. -

Double Trouble
3 Nov 2009 | 4:08 amAndy Robinson has announced Scotland is to have two captains for the autumn internationals – incumbent Mike Blair and widely touted replacement Chris Cusiter who led the A team to victory in the IRB Nations Cup. Whoever is on the pitch leads the team, presumably with the usual switch around the 60 minute mark (though I’d hope not). This seems like a sensible compromise between picking a captain months ahead of any indication of form (cf Borthwick, Steve) and not picking a captain till the team announcement which gives us nothing to get excited about in advance. Based on current… -
Glasgow Recover Their Strength, Blair Benched
29 Oct 2009 | 5:03 amDespite another virus rifling through the Glasgow team this week, Sean Lineen has named a team close to full strength for Friday in an attempt to pilfer some away points from an Ospreys team that will be shorn of some of its top line Welsh talent. Richie Gray seemed to impress the radio commentators last week and is back in again – good to see our youngsters getting blooded, despite what Stephen Jones might think about such things elsewhere. A good game for Cusiter on Friday could see him claim the Scotland 9 shirt for the first time in years, and the captaincy too perhaps? While Max… -
Who’s Carrying the Ball?
26 Oct 2009 | 4:04 amEdinburgh got a well deserved if unspectacular win at home to Munster on Friday while Glasgow laboured in the second half but eventually secured the expected four-try bonus point against Connacht, putting the Scottish teams at third and fourth in the league table. Sean Lineen has been asserting everywhere he can that Thom Evans is “back”, and with two tries (including a strong tackle-busting effort off his favourite inside ball move) who can argue? Next weekend before a break going into the Autumn Internationals and Andy Robinson’s all important first match with Fiji,… -

Bok conditioning will be carefully watched next year
4 Nov 2009 | 9:12 pmThe Springboks might lose a few games next year in the run up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, because the best team may not always be selected. Experts at a media workshop in Johannesburg agreed that a number of standout players will have to be carefully managed in the next two years. Springbok fitness and conditioning coach Neels Liebel and sports scientist Tim Noakes said this would be vital to ensure top players were are fit and in peak condition for the World Cup in New Zealand September 9 in 2011. Noakes showed a series of graphs on how players used excessively in a season tended to either… -
Questions about Bok selection
3 Nov 2009 | 9:50 pmThere will always be questions about Bok selection leaving some people happy and others unhappy and there was no exception on Saturday night when the squad was named. Springbok coach Peter de Villiers named ten uncapped players, which includes the nine newcomers and Earl Rose, the erratic Lions utility back that he has backed from the outset and was selected for last year’s tour of Britain as well as the series against the British and Irish Lions without earning a cap. De Villiers said afterwards that he had chosen on form which in many cases was true, but in other areas not. For the… -
Naqelavuki remains in the picture
22 Oct 2009 | 11:14 pmDespite Bryan Habana’s move to Cape Town, the excellent form of Gio Aplon and the experience of Frikkie Welsh, Fijian International Sireli Naqelavuki still remains in the picture as Stormers wing. In fact Stormers head coach Rassie Erasmus admitted he has a “soft spot” for the Fijian, who cost Western Province dearly when a head-high tackle - the result of a lazy, stiff arm - handed Springbok star Morné Steyn and opportunity to win the Currie Cup semifinal for the Blue Bulls last Saturday. Steyn duly obliged and slotted a penalty from near 50 metres, at an angle, to see the… -
Cheetahs want to neutralise Morne Steyn
22 Oct 2009 | 2:00 amAccording to statistics the Cheetahs have the recipe to take the excellent penalty kicking of Morne Steyn out of the equation - excellent discipline. The simple recipe, which none of the All Blacks, Wallabies, British and Irish Lions or other Currie Cup teams could come up with this year, is outstanding discipline. The Cheetahs have conceded only 129 penalties to date in this year’s Currie Cup, which is fewer than any other team. The Blue Bulls have been penalised 23 more times than the Free Staters. In fact, the Bulls have conceded the third most penalties in the competition. Western…

The tackle-shy Bledisloe
2 Nov 2009 | 1:34 pmThe Tokyo Bledisloe match featured the clash of two backlines who basically can’t tackle to save themselves. Both the Wallabies and All Blacks backs fall off one in four tackles they attempt. Let’s look at the Wallabies first, using calculations derived from 2009 Super 14 stats compiled by Verusco Technologies. The first figure is the average number of tackles made per 80 minutes played, and the figure in brackets is the percentage of missed tackles: Wallabies backs Will Genia 7.5 (27.0) Matt Giteau 10.0 (15.6) Digby Ioane 7.3 (25.6) Adam Ashley-Cooper 7.2 (25.0) Ryan Cross 7.9… -
