  • 5 Uncapped Players to Tour

    Rory Baldwin
    16 May 2012 | 5:55 am
Scotland coach Andy Robinson today announced a 28-man squad for the tour of Australia and the Pacific Isles. Just few of the other players left at home this time out are: Ruaridh Jackson, Graeme Morrison, Hugo Southwell, Moray Low, Chris Fusaro, Ryan Wilson, Alex Dunbar and Johnnie Beattie. If the new guns – in the loosehead and centres particularly – bed in successfully, some of these guys may struggle to return come the autumn. Conversely the likes of Fusaro, Dunbar and Wilson should count themselves very unlucky not to be going. The potential is there for a young exciting…

Aspects of Law approved for trial include limiting the time that the ball is available at the back of a ruck and the positioning of taking a…
  • Scotland Announce EMC Test Dates

    Rory Baldwin
    15 May 2012 | 7:09 am
Scotland will play three Tests against Southern Hemisphere teams this November, it was confirmed today by the big chiefs at Murrayfield. The EMC Tests will see Scotland face New Zealand, South Africa and Tonga in (depending on the summer tour) a series of matches that could make or break Robinson’s reign at Murrayfield. More dismal results in an arena televised by the BBC (as opposed to 3am in Samoa when only sad cases like us will be paying attention) will only increase the public pressure. Conversely, good results against Australia and South Africa have been counted in…
  • Robinson Seeking The Right Blend As Options Narrow

    Gavin Harper
    15 May 2012 | 4:56 am
It seems unlikely there will be many new faces when Andy Robinson names his Scotland squad later this week for the summer tour Down Under, with only 28 places available on the plane to Australia. Robinson is likely to keep faith with the majority of the squad involved in this year’s Six Nations, with soon-to-be-qualified try machine Tim Visser certain to travel, and expected to be the only new face in the squad. Visser’s inclusion was always going to come at this stage given his club form, and he will probably replace injured Edinburgh team-mate Lee Jones. Alasdair Strokosch will come…

    13 May 2012 | 11:08 am
Glasgow came away from Dublin at the end of their RaboDirect PRO12 season with probably a similar feeling to Edinburgh at the end of their Heineken Cup run. There was unfinished business – and points – left out on the field in this game, and this game did not perhaps reflect all the progress they have made this season. To a certain extent those feelings would be justified – two missed penalties and a conversion would have been very handy indeed on the scoreboard – but Sean Lineen and the team should be incredibly proud of how they have bounced back from last…

  • Governance ARU style and rugby’s faceless-man

    16 May 2012 | 2:49 am
Australian rugby’s governance structure is under review with both New South Wales and Queensland’s current voting powers set to be knee-capped in favour of a ‘one vote one value’ system across all states. This mightn’t be a bad thing, but when you consider the potential it has to concentrate the ARU’s control over the game, this mightn’t be a good thing either. The review will by headed by disgraced former Labor Senator, Mark ‘The Faceless-Man’ Arbib and the chairman of the ARU’s governance committee, Peter Cosgrove. • Wallaby contenders by the numbers: Openside

    Matt Rowley (Gagger)
    15 May 2012 | 6:33 pm
There’s been a lot of buzz around the open side flanker position this week, with good cause – Australia seems to have at least 3 sevens looking the goods – the “oldest” of which is still just 24. It’s being billed as the battle of the fetchers – Pocock v. Hooper v. Gill – but is it? What do the stats tells us? In my opinion, they show us three subtly different styles of play.First – the Wallaby incumbent and Western Force Captain, David Pocock. If there’s any one thing that stands out about Poey, it’s his work rate. He hits…

  • KeoTV: Stormers need some fresh eyes

    Ryan
    16 May 2012 | 2:19 am
RYAN VREDE says the Stormers must recruit a high quality consultant to help remedy their attacking impotency.
  • Stormers focus on consistency, not tries

    JC
    16 May 2012 | 2:18 am
The Stormers are more concerned with their inability to produce an 80-minute performance than the dearth of four-try bonus points. The Cape franchise may be the best defensive side in the tournament, and they may boast a record of nine wins in 10 matches, but that impressive winning record hasn’t been enough to keep them at the top of the South African conference. Coach Allister Coetzee, however, says four-try bonus points won’t matter if the team continues to win. Coetzee is of the belief that defence wins matches, and that an obsession with attack may compromise the ability to…
  • Bulls brace for gainline blitz

    Ryan
    15 May 2012 | 11:42 pm
Frans Ludeke says the nature of the Highlanders’ approach makes dominating the gainline more critical than in most matches. Statistics show the Highlanders to be among the teams who’ve kicked the least in the tournament. The Dunedin-based franchise have a string of players among the tournament’s top ball carriers and metres made while carrying, the most prominent of those being loose forwards Nasi Manu and Adam Thomson, who, when allowed to boss the tackle fight, have been constant sources of go-forward. That momentum has seen the likes of Rico Gear – their primary…
  • Tiaan to tackle Tahs

    JC
    15 May 2012 | 10:05 pm
The more robust Tiaan Liebenberg has been preferred to start against the Waratahs while Canadian Jebb Sinclair is promoted to the Stormers frontline because of injuries. Liebenberg displaces Deon Fourie in the starting side, while Sinclair comes in for the injured Nizaam Carr. Western Province loose forward Don Armand is brought into the squad for Saturday’s game against the Waratahs, and so will miss the Vodacom Cup final against Griquas on Friday. Meanwhile, coach Allister Coetzee will continue to search for an experienced player to cover the No 8 position. Coetzee admitted that he…
  • Mitchell sticks with Auckland losers

    Gareth
    15 May 2012 | 10:00 pm
John Mitchell has made no changes to his match 22 ahead of the Lions’ clash against the Reds this weekend. The Lions will head to Brisbane to face the Super Rugby defending champions with the same side that lost 25-3 to the Blues in Auckland. This means outside backs Jaco Taute and Lionel Mapoe remain as the midfield combination, while scrumhalf Ross Cronje keeps his starting place ahead of Tian Meyer. Lions – 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Deon van Rensburg, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Jaco Taute, 11 Michael Killian, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Joshua Strauss (c), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derrick…

  • Aviva Premiership semi-finals highlights wrap-up

    16 May 2012 | 10:13 am
Leicester Tigers and Harlequins will contest the Aviva Premiership Final on May 26th following their semi-final victories over the weekend. The Tigers are favourites for many, but Harlequins don't see it that way. A late try from Harlequins prop Joe Marler sealed a 25-23 win over Northampton Saints at The Stoop on Saturday, setting them up for an eighth consecutive Premiership final appearance. Marler, whose 77th-minute try was converted by Nick Evans, says that despite Leicester's powerful forwards and incredible record, Quins will take it to them up front. "People expect us to the throw the…
  • The Reds find form ahead of Quade Cooper's much anticipated return

    16 May 2012 | 3:20 am
The Reds ended the Chiefs' nine-game winning streak with a 42-27 victory in Brisbane on Sunday. The win keeps their title defence hopes alive, and has helped build momentum in time for the return of star flyhalf, Quade Cooper. The Queensland outfit are ninth on the overall Super Rugby table, but with the conference system, they sit in second place in the Australian section, so still have a good chance of making the playoffs. They came from 22-8 down against the table topping Chiefs, scoring four tries in 10 minutes, including a brilliant 60 metre solo effort from halfback Will Genia. He'll be…

  • Fiji win the London Sevens as New Zealand take overall series title

    14 May 2012 | 10:35 am
Fiji took the London Sevens title in convincing style as they beat rivals Samoa 38-15 in the Cup final on Sunday, but it was New Zealand who captured the overall series title, their 10th in 13th years. Below are highlights from both day's play at Twickenham. New Zealand's 36-0 demolition of South Africa in the quarter-finals was enough to clinch them the overall title, so when they lost 37-7 to Fiji in the semi-finals, it didn't bother them too much. They ended top of the table and as you can see below, finishing just marginally ahead of Fiji. "It's pretty special, we worked extremely hard to…
  • Mamuka Gorgodze and Yoann Maestri sent off in Toulouse vs Montpellier battle

    14 May 2012 | 2:19 am
On a day that determined who progresses in the Top 14 play off race, two red cards and a yellow were brandished in a heated game between Toulouse and Montpellier. Both players are likely to face suspensions, ruling them out of the next round. Toulouse won the match 20-13 and in doing so ended top of the table on 87 points, alongside Clermont, both of whom have securred semi-final places. The next two spots will be contested when Toulon play Racing Metro, and Castres play Montpellier. Winger Timoci Matanavou scored three tries, but one of the more significant talking points in the game occured…
